Megalomanic

“Megalomaniac” is a 2022 film directed by Karim Ouelhaj, a Belgian director, screenwriter, and producer, winner of the Méliès d’Or for “The Frozen Eye” (2016). The film tells the story of the true unsolved case of the “Butcher of Mons” in Belgium. With its cold and intense photography, gloomy settings, and disturbing characters, it raises great expectations for this extreme French horror, characterized by excellent aesthetics. Released in some US theaters on September 8, 2023, and available digitally from September 26, 2023, there is still no information on a possible Italian distribution.

The Trunk – Locked In

“Trunk – Locked In,” a German thriller film of 2024, was recently released on Prime Video under the title “Il bagagliaio – In trappola,” directed by Marc Schießer in his feature film debut. The story begins with a woman kidnapped and locked in the trunk of a car. The beautiful photography and the ingenuity of the framing and camera movements suggest a film made by someone with clear ideas on how to shoot thrillers. Moreover, I appreciate films set in confined spaces, as they require a good script.

Vermines

“Vermines,” a French horror film of 2023 about spiders, is directed by Sébastien Vanicek. The residents of a building face an invasion of venomous spiders, the central theme of Vanicek’s first feature film. Distributed in Italy by Midnight Factory, the horror label of Plaion, it was premiered at the Fantasticon Film Fest, held during the Games Week. The horror genre has been waiting for years for a good spider film, and according to the trailer, “Vermines” seems to be a quality film that could satisfy fans of eco-vengeance spider horrors.

Double Blind

“Double Blind,” an Irish horror film of 2024 directed by Ian Hunt, follows a group of young people subjected to pharmaceutical experimentation in an isolated medical center, who must face a terrible side effect: if they fall asleep… The quality of the images, beautiful photography, distressing scenography, and a convincing cast suggest that this first film by Hunt could be well-received by the public. Premiered worldwide at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival in the Ultra Movies section, a release date in Italy for streaming or cinema has not yet been announced. However, it is known that the film will be available in some US cinemas from February 9, 2024, and on digital platforms from February 13, 2024.

Bathtub Shark Attack

Bathtub Shark Attack”Bathtub Shark Attack” is a 2023 American trash horror film written and directed by Madeline Deering. A young couple moves into an affordable apartment, discovering an ancient evil in the pipes. Made as a horror-comedy with practical effects that border on the ridiculous, it shows the director’s irony and love for trash cinema. Deering, already known for “Spiral Animal,” a z-movie horror shot on VHS, demonstrates how to entertain and create special effects that are both stupid and ingenious at the same time. “Bathtub Shark Attack” is already a cult for me. Released in US cinemas on November 1, 2022, a possible Blu-ray release is expected in the following months.

Visitors

“Visitors,” a 2023 Japanese trash horror directed by Kenichi Ugana, is a one-hour horror anthology that mixes horror, comedy, splatter, science fiction, and various absurdities, with a cameo by Lloyd Kaufman. The trailer reveals the punk soul of this production and the reminiscences of the world of “Evil Dead.” In the US, the film is already available for streaming on SCREAMBOX since November 21, 2023. There is still no information on its release in Italy.

You’ll Never Find Me

“You’ll Never Find Me,” a 2023 Australian horror-thriller directed by Indianna Bell and Josiah Allen in their first experience as directors, follows Patrick, a man isolated living in a trailer park and receives a visit from a young woman seeking refuge during a storm. But what is the real reason for her visit? The film has received an extremely positive reception from critics, with an average score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Distribution rights outside of Australia and New Zealand have been acquired by Blue Finch Films, while Shudder holds the rights for North America, Ireland, and the United Kingdom, with a release scheduled for 2024. The film has been compared to “Don’t Breathe” for its tension and claustrophobic setting. An Italian release date has not yet been announced.

Krazy House

Krazy House is a 2024 Dutch horror-comedy directed by Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil, featuring well-known faces like Nick Frost and Alicia Silverstone. Set in the 90s, the film follows the story of Bernie, a religious homemaker who discovers that the workers hired for home repairs are actually Russian criminals. This film marks the English language debut for directors Haars and Van der Kuil, known as founding members of the Dutch comedy group “New Kids.” It presents itself as a very basic sitcom, also thanks to perfect vintage photography, but Krazy House is something different. Indeed, the trailer unexpectedly offers a few seconds of pure violence and gore. The film will debut in the Midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2024.

Stopmotion

Stopmotion is a 2023 British horror film directed by Robert Morgan in his debut in a feature film. The film tells the story of Ella, a stop-motion animator who, while completing her film, finds herself struggling with her inner demons and the loss of her oppressive mother. The situation becomes complicated when a neighbor suggests adding a monster to her film, called Ashman. Premiered worldwide at the Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, on September 24, 2023, it won the award for “best director” and was also awarded the Special Jury Award in the Official Fantastic Selection at the 56th Sitges Film Festival. Stopmotion, which has collected 100% positive reviews (though only on 9 reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes, presents itself as a fascinating and very metacinematic film. The coexistence of live-action cinema with stop-motion technique are the elements that make it one of my most anticipated films. Regarding the release in the Bel Paese, nothing to report.
